課程概述與目標: This course aims to cultivate and train an international manager with international view and agile capability. It provides students with a wider, better and in-depth understanding in international business management from a cultural perspective. The course proceeds with lectures and case studies, presented and discussed, in class. In addition, the course relies on readings, cases, and other materials from the internet. Students are encouraged to play an active role in raising questions, advancing ideas and sharing opinions throughout the whole course.

3 Part One: Environmental Foundation Ch. 1: Globalization and International Linkage Assess the implicaitons of globalization for countries, industies, firms, and communities  
4 Part Two: The Role of Culture Ch. 4: The Meanings and Dimensions of Culture Identify the major dimensions of culture relevant to work settings, and discuss their effects onbehavior in an international environment.  
5 Part Two: The Role of Culture Ch. 5: Managing Across Cultures Discuss cultural differences and similiarities

    6 Part Two: The Role of Culture Ch. 6: Organizational Cultures and Diversity Identify the four most common categories of organizational culture that have been found through research, and discuss the characteristics of each.  
    7 Part Two: The Role of Culture Ch. 7: Cross-Cultural Communication and Negotiation Examine the language, perception, and culture of communication and nonverbal barriers to effective internatinal communications.  
    8 Part Three: International Strategic Management Ch. 8: Strategy Formulation and Implementation Identify the basic steps in strategic planning, including environmental scanning, internal resource analysis of the MNC's strengths and weaknesses, and goal formulation.  
    9 Mid-Term Week Submit mid-term essay Review and share what have learned from lectures, discussions and cases studies.

    10 Part Three: International Strategic Management Ch. 8: Strategy Formulation and Implementation Describe how an MNC implements the strategic plan, such as how it chooses a site for overseas operations.  
    11 Part Three: International Strategic Management Ch. 9: Entry Strategies and Organizational Structures Examine the major types of entry strategies and organizational structure, inculding the conditions that make on preferable to others.  
    12 Part Three: International Strategic Management Ch. 10: Managing Political Risk, Government Relations, and Alliances Discuss strategies to mitigate political risk and develop productive relations with governments.  
    13 Part Three: International Strategic Management Ch. 11: Management Decision and Control Discuss comparative examples of decison making in different countries.  
    14 Part Four: OB and HRM Ch. 12: Motivation Across Cultures Understand the importance of job design, work centrality, and rewards in motivating employees in an international context.

    16 Part Four: OB and HRM Ch. 14: Human Resource Selection and Development Across Cultures Dicuss the selection criteria and procedures used by organizations and individual managers when making final decisions.  
    17 Recap In-Depth Integrative Case 4.1: HSBC in China Recap and review key concepts and models through integrative in-depth case study.  
    18 Final Exam. Week Take international business examples to describe and analyze their cross cultural management practices, draw conclusions and then propose suggestions for them to better manage across cultures. Review and reflect what have learned from cross-cultural management by writing a final report.
